PERIANAL CONDYLOMA(VENEREAL WARTS) This is a virally induced skin condition (human papilloma virus) characterized by the occurrence of singular or multiple perianal and / or perigenital outgrowths similar to warts. The lesions may occur both on the skin and on the mucosa and are sexually transmitted. There are over 70 serotypes of papilloma virus. Serotypes 6, 11, 42 are frequently associated with condyloma. In the sexually active population the human papilloma virus infects about 50 % of them; once symptomatic, the infection spreads to the whole anal and genital region. Condyloma only occurs in some of the infected population, but whenever present it exhibits a rapid tumor-like growth, the lesions invading the anal duct, the vagina, the collum and perineum and may get to impressive sizes. It usually evolves towards supra-infection, fetid secretion, anal and genital obstruction, bleeding and have a high risk of malignant transformation (cervical, vaginal and anal cancer). This is why the therapy is a must (following the completion of assessment with anal and rectal examination, colposcopy and Papanicolau smear). It is recommended to perform a biopsy prior to the treatment of the wart lesions as well as some serology tests for syphilis, considering that they have in common the same sexual transmission and similar lesions in some situations. |
